It’s a chinese lantern. They are usually dried and sold for decoration – I didn’t know they were edible!
the chinese lantern is a member of the nightshade family and cannot be eaten indiscriminately. my understanding is that asian varieties are cultivated to be sweet, rather than sour or (probably poisonous) bitter.
Related to nightshade? That’s no joke!
I’m pretty sure he was telling us to taste them… but the cart was pretty dirty, so I didn’t have one.
