I saw a ‘dramatisation’ on TV of the Thorn Birds many years ago and sat spell-bound? captivated? from beginning to end. It was so unbelievably bad. Not often you see such cringeworthy stuff. Some time afterwards I read the book to see how it compared. It was definitely different; the characters in the TV production had had their persona amended to fit around the actors . . . but I never finished the book, it too was too much for me.
I actually just read the book (it was one of the few English books available, so I finished it) but really didn’t enjoy it. It is quite handy for propping up my laptop to a more comfortable typing position, though… exactly the same size as “Scarlett”, another disappointing book which holds up the other side.
