I Prophesy: The Future Revealed is more like an interactive sci-fi show than a typical MMO game. Your avatar can move from room to room, like in a usual MMO, but instead of shopping or combat, each room has a question on the future. Players answer questions on the future of the environment, human aging, what future tech is possible, what our cities will look like in the future, and so forth. Each room also has a short, attention-grabbing videos, which seem designed to leave viewers with more questions than answers. I’m a big fan of thoughtful speculative fiction, even theories I don’t agree with, so I enjoyed the questions and the videos.
Overall, it reminded me a bit of N., only with mini sci-fi and futuristic videos, instead of Stephen King suspense. Also, you can chat with other iProphesy players while watching or after watching.
Every time I see the name written as iProphesy, I have to wonder if there’s anything less futuristic than branding a product with a trendy “now” look? To backup my point, I have a couple shelves of nineteen-seventies speculative fiction paperbacks with, well, nineteen-seventies fonts and colors. See what I mean? I’ll try to overlook it because it’s also written I Prophesy and it may just be a way to separate words in the web address.
Anyway, characters can explore the I Prophesy world, play minigames, unlock secret avatar enhancements, and chat about the videos and questions on the forums. I know game reviewers are supposed to say how much the graphics suck, and how everything “looks so fake”, but, as usual, I think this game is pretty. I especially like the background on the nanotechnology level, and the genie avatar enhancement. And isn’t an MMO with virtual avatars a little science-fictiony itself?

This is a sponsored post. I hope you guys don’t see it as spammy, I promise to write what I really think and not just say nice things. (as if I ever have that problem) It’s not exactly a secret that I hope to turn writing about new games into my paying job, so I was pretty pleased to get this.

I’m not sure this is a game. There are mini games in it, but on the whole it’s just a clever way to navigate some pretty standard content tied in to a TV show. I find a lot of it interesting, but the exploration part could be easier. I’m thinking especially about how it handles the content on floating platforms. Some people think that’s the fun of exploration; I think its making things harder than they need to be by not indicating that something is up there.
Vision TV, the Canadian station that airs the show (sorry USA) is certainly an interesting channel. They are a nonprofit multicultural faith based network giving air to a wide range of beliefs from new age to Hindi. Their programing lineup is like a cross between the Hallmark Channel and Sci-fi daytime. Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Quantum Leap, Wonderfalls, and Murder She Wrote.
Re: Vision TV — I can’t decide if a cross between Hallmark and Scifi would be character-driven scifi or just an all-around mess… Going to have to reserve judgment on this one!
Re: Exploration — I like exploring for new things, and once there are people actually using the site, word-of-mouth will probably make it easier to find out about hidden stuff.
