Ex-Expat Thoughts

I was listening to Obama’s Cairo speech on NPR the other day when the radio cut out and it went to static. My first thought was not that I was driving through a radio dead zone, or that NPR might be having difficulties, but that Obama must have mentioned Tiananmen and gotten censored.

I am more apt to criticize my life among strip malls and highways than to praise it, but there are some great things about being in the US.

Not having ever been to your country before, I am not in much of a position to comment with regard to America in particular, but I must say that there are a great many things which your country enjoys which are not enjoyed by many others throughout the world (like food, access to clean water, etc).

You should feel very proud of your country and I certainly hope that you thoughly enjoy your time back there.

Do you think that you will ever go back to China to teach? I would like to go back, but I can’t decide what is more important – enjoying my life now by teaching, traveling, experiencing the bizzare etc. and worrying about retirement crap later or worrying about my retirement crap now and hope that I am healtly and wealthly enough to enjoy my life by teaching, traveling, experiencing the bizzare etc. at the ripe old age of 65(If I live that long, and the world doesn’t end in 2012). Any thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean! I feel like we’re missing out on so much excitement and adventure by living in the US, but we’re trying to get a financial cushion to let us travel again. (and, um, there’s this wedding thing I’d like to do too) Ideally we’ll land expat jobs w/ am American salary, so we can travel *and* save for uncertain times.

I really hope to live abroad again (meeting new people, experiencing the bizarre, seeing new sights, trying to speak another language) but I don’t think it’ll be China because there’s so much world I haven’t visited yet!

PS I’ve been missing you w/ your recent blog silence, I hope everything is going well for you

Hey, I like you new look. That is the one downside of Google Reader, you don’t get to see the site as often.

I say go for all the travel you can right now. Money saved, is money lost to inflation. 🙂 And you might not make it to 65 anyway. 🙂

I agree with Luke! Come back to China!

  6. Meg says:

@Luke Thanks! Glad you like it! 65 seems like a REALLY long time away… loads of time for me to publish my bestseller! We’ve got to build up an emergency fund before living abroad again, though, coming home w/ no savings was rough. We’re hoping for expat jobs w/ an American company to solve both dilemmas!
