I spent a good chunk of my freshman year at college on MUDs! 'Course, the only guy I met from that was a small weaselly guy from Rutgers. (We went on one date, and then I told him via email that I was gay to get him to stop calling me.) I did have a friend in college though who met her boyfriend online, I believe through a MUD. They got married, although no clue if they're still together as we lost touch over the years.

95 was really the 'height' of the MUD thing. There was a lot of programming done on college campuses and such even as early as the low 80s. They didn't really go into heavy circulation until the early 90s however. They were just starting to experiment with 'Graphic MUDs' (mostly attempts to tie character descriptions to web images) but full blown MMOs didn't show up for two more years.

Ahhhh.. memory lane.

I never knew that about you two! That's awesome! And, wow, MUDs were pretty cutting edge in '95, I remember how amazed I was that I was playing a computer game *with other people*!

funnily enough, this is nothing new but the social meme manages to still exist. Alyson and I met via MUD back in 95. Back then we didn't even have fancy avatars to show off, it was all text. Well, there was some ASCII art.

Before I start talking about walking to school uphill both ways in 3 feet of snow... we are now 14 years later and still together and I'm pretty sure we're not a unique case.
