Nightlife

“Oh no! There’s that girl coming up the path to give me flowers!” Stick announced.

I looked up from my book and told my boyfriend that I didn’t want to hear it.

“I really thought that after I hooked up with her friend, she wouldn’t want to see me again!”

“Not listening to you.”

“Because I forgot that the other girl was still downstairs, and she overheard, and got mad, and –“

As amusing as it is to watch my boyfriend picking out clothes for Sim-dates, and trying to meet his virtual girlfriends’ needs, I have to admit that I feel a little jealous.

“Stick, The Sims 2 is my game! And it’s my expansion pack! Which I haven’t played yet because you’re hogging it!”

Bikini Gaming

Usually I get really excited about girl-gaming news, only to find out it’s an ad for Barbie’s Magical Something. This time, I was totally let down for a different reason.

For so long, video games have been very much a guy thing, but this is no longer the case. We’re seeing more and more female gamers who are just as hardcore as anyone else begins this article at GamerHelp.

This promising opening is followed by a series of pictures of girls in their panties licking consoles. Because everyone knows that guys play games in sweatshirts, but girls? We always put on a schoolgirl skirt and a push-up bra to play WarCraft! While I look like an animated dwarf online, I’m really on front of the computer in lingerie and mascara.

Seriously, GamerHelp, you’re just giving Stick unrealistic expectations.

One Child Left Behind

I haven’t wanted to post about the Virginia Tech shooting because there’s really nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said more eloquently.

Yesterday when I got to LCC, I had a new handout in my mailbox. It’s all about what to do if a crazed gunman runs around campus trying to kill everyone! It was two pages, including such ground-breaking new policies as “Don’t aggravate the shooter” and “Give your name and location when dialing 9-1-1” Um, thanks? That’s totally what we’ll do if we’re not being shot to death!

I tend to think that anything that isn’t directly related to ESL is a waste of time. But this one seemed particularly backwards, since protecting oneself against a homicidal maniac is secondary to spotting trouble before it involves murder. The killer at VT was, at some point, someone’s little boy and someone’s student.

As teachers, we are required by state law to report any suspicion of physical or sexual abuse in our students’ lives. What about psychological problems? Do we have an obligation to report a suspicion of potential mental problems? And if we do, how do we keep from shipping every grumpy goth kid off to already-overworked school shrinks? How do we sort out a future mass murderer from every other student who’s having a rough breakup? How can we lead troubled kids like Young towards writing bad poetry and away from killing other people?

Met Road Trip

It’s not just me. Stick, Hugo and Diana love Dunkin’ Donuts too.

Our destination.

Most people don’t know this, but the ancient Greeks actually invented the thong. Unfortunately, they used copper, so it never really caught on.

Even the pharoahs of Egypt like Peking duck. Actually, this guy is a pharoah’s bookkeeper, so he’s probably taking the pharoah’s brewer and the pharoah’s physician out on the expense account. GAMBEI!

Handome fellow.

This sign says “No turn on red”.

Our partners in crime, Hugo and Diana.

You might notice that Diana’s feet don’t touch the ground. Stick just did.

Of course I can sit on the floor in Port Authority! I sat on the floor in China.

Canadian Piracy

This article from Danwei explains China’s position on intellectual property, and explains that Canada is a way bigger piracy threat than China. The gist is that if you if you total the amount of money lost on pirated software in Canada and in China (forget that Canadian prices are a bit higher than Chinese), and then divide it by the number of people in each country (that’s 1.3 billion in China, and I think 12 people in Canada? Maybe only 10 now that PandaPassport and Humanaught moved to China), you get the per capita piracy loss.

I think the final values are $16.78 per pirating Canuck, and $1.68 for each Chinese pirate, which totally proves that our neighbors to the north are the problem.

A Nice Fire-Engine Red

I tried to convince Stick that this fire engine would solve all my driving problems. Too much traffic? Turn on the flashers! No place to park? Park in the fire lane! Forget when we parked the car? Oh, yeah, it’s the GIANT RED FIRETRUCK!

Instead, we got a silver Saturn, which does turn a little more easily than the fire engine. (Not that Stick would let me test-drive the firetruck.)
