One of my students last semester wrote about how much he loves playing Cyberpunk 2077, which reminded me how much I used to enjoy tabletop Cyberpunk, and as soon as the semester finished, I got it.
I love this game so far. You can do so much character customization. Look, I’ve been playing games since the 90s, simply having a playable girl avatar is usually enough for me. Cyberpunk character creations is like TheSims, only with better makeup and hairstyles. You can pick so many cool haircolors and styles and piercings, and then you can change them up in the game. You’re not locked in! You can have ALL the hairstyles! Also, all the nail polish colors, and then when you do the hacking minigame, you can see your cute manicure!
I haven’t gotten very far in the main storyline because I just want to hack things for money, and then use that money for better clothes and better hacking, which I can then use for more money, for better clothes and better hacking…
And the accessibility is great, you can make the font sizes bigger in settings. The colorblind mode also works for higher contrast for me.
Ok, now the annoying parts. There’s too much driving, so I just skip any/all missions where I’m expected to drive a car. I don’t drive a real car when it would actually be convenient for my life, I’m definitely not going to drive a pretend car for fun. Oh, I gotta drive to the hospital to save a guy? Guess he’s gonna die.
The game is a bit buggy though and parts of the UI can be the opposite of intuitive, I kinda understand why gamers complained about it at release, so sometimes I have to check with Cyberpunk Reddit to figure out why something’s not working. It’s hard to know — is it a lag? am I standing a millimeter away from the activation point? Does this mission need something else first, or is it just buggy and need to log out and log back in? Was I supposed to be holding the hotkey or pressing the hotkey? (Most of the UI things ask you to hold a key while something activates, like pathing, fast travel, logging in, crafting, etc. but holding T hangs up the phone and quickly pressing T answers it. Ask me how many times I hung up on fixers. No, don’t, it makes me sound stupid.) Yes, all you nerds on the Reddit threads are my friends now, and none of you know you’re helping a middle-aged English teacher play pretend.
