I was on my way to the American Embassy the other day, and lost my way in the maze of manicured gardens and high-security gates in the embassy district. I stopped the first guard I saw, who wasn’t standing at attention on a little pedestal, and asked in my terrible Chinese where the America… um… big office is located. To my suprise and delight, he answered me in very good English, and gave me detailed directions in complete English sentences.
I followed his excellent directions to what turned out to be the British Embassy. Oops. I retraced my steps, and saw the same guard again.
“You’re going the wrong way,” he told me, pointing me back the way I’d just come.
“No, I’m looking for the American embassy.”
“American!!! But all the foreigners who look like you are going to the British Embassy!”
ha, ha.
Just stay there for a little while, I am sure they still consider you as foreigner.
I’m tired of showing people my passport to explain why I’m American.
And there some dude still asked me:
“why! But you are Chinese!”
🙂
So now if anyone ask me,
My answer is, “What’s the point?”
How could they tell? All white people look the same!
Maybe because she has a thin figure ;).
Well,
When you live in China over 1 year, you all be thin:),
too much pressure!;)
By the way,
swing to Cao Xueqin’s museum if you have time, pray in front of his statue, it might help you learn and write chinese:-)
For those of you that don’t know, this “she’s British” theme has been a long running joke here. Everyone in China assumes our girl Violet Eclipse is British…
Maybe it IS the thin thing (I’m often reminded that all Americans are very fat because of eating hamburgers all day long), but Wha Wha Wha is right, it seems like everyone in Beijing thinks I’m British!!! Is there some Chinese stereotype about how Brits are supposed to look?
Ahhh…these days thanks to 8 years of *our* George II, I think being called British may be considered a compliment!
I heard you hold your fork funny
My grandma told me when I get married then I will get fat, coz I work more often in the house than outside partying 🙂
it seems weight topic is universal for all girls?:-)
Look at it this way, Violet, at least they don’t think you’re French.
